MARC’s mission is: “to foster mindful awareness across the lifespan through education and research to promote well-being and a more compassionate society”. They define mindful awareness as: “paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is”. MARC is lead by Michael Irwin and includes well-known scientists in the field including Susan Smalley and Daniel J. Siegel. The center is involved in teaching mindfulness to the general public and to professionals at UCLA’ medical education program (doctors, students, staff and faculty, mental health professionals), publishing research, and bringing into pre-K through grade 12 education through teacher training programs and mindful awareness classes in schools. Currently MARC is studying mindfulness for sleep problems, breast cancer, ADHD and other.
